About Vernwell

The consultant who has
done it for real

James Eyles ACMA is not a theorist. He has sat on the board, driven a PE-backed exit, and personally built the systems that ran a £50m+ business. That experience is what every Vernwell client gets access to.

James Eyles ACMA

Founder & Principal Consultant

Vernwell was founded by James Eyles, a CIMA-qualified commercial director and technology leader based in West Malvern, Worcestershire. Before establishing Vernwell, James spent over a decade at Online Home Retail — the business behind Plumbworld — where he served as IT Director and was a member of the management buyout team that took the company through private equity ownership and ultimately to a successful exit to Highbourne Group.

That experience — scaling a business commercially, managing technology at board level, understanding what data actually matters to investors and operators — is the foundation of everything Vernwell does. When James recommends a system, designs a dashboard, or scopes a digital marketing campaign, he does so as someone who has been accountable for those decisions with real money at stake.

James continues to work with Plumbworld on a part-time basis, maintaining an active connection to a live, high-volume e-commerce operation. That ongoing commercial exposure keeps the advice sharp and grounded in current reality — not case studies from five years ago.

Location

Based in West Malvern

Vernwell is based in West Malvern, Worcestershire. Local to businesses across the county and the wider West Midlands, with full UK remote delivery capability.

The Vernwell Philosophy

Consultancy that's accountable to outcomes

Most consultancies are structured to maximise billable hours. Vernwell is structured around the opposite: fixed-scope engagements with defined outcomes, delivered by the same person who agreed them with you.

That accountability changes how the work gets done. Every recommendation has to be practical, implementable, and commercially justified — because James has to stand behind it with his name, not hand it off to a delivery team.

It also changes the relationship. You get someone who will tell you when a technology isn't the right answer, when a simpler solution exists, and when the real problem isn't the one you originally brought in. That kind of honesty is rare in agency relationships — and it's the thing most Vernwell clients say they value most.

Community & Wider Roles

Actively involved in Worcestershire

Beyond commercial consultancy, James is actively involved in the local community in Worcestershire. As Treasurer of Barnards Green Cricket Club in Malvern, he applies the same professional rigour to volunteer finance and governance that he brings to client work.

James is also the Syndicate Manager for a racing syndicate, and maintains an active interest in UK equities and financial markets — keeping the commercial and analytical instincts sharp across a range of contexts.

This breadth of engagement — from PE-backed technology businesses to community organisations — gives Vernwell an unusual ability to adapt both the language and the approach to whatever the client actually needs.
